I have a confession to make, I just don’t understand the matte liquid lipstick obsession that has dominated the beauty world for what seems like forever. For example, as beautiful as the infamous Kylie Lip Kits, Jeffree Star Velour collection and Manny MUA x OFRA collaborations look, the amount UK bloggers are more than happy to pay in shipping fees completely baffles me, especially since I’ve read some less than complimentary things about Miss Jenner’s customer service (read Salt & Chic’s blog post for example). Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against celebrity endorsed beauty products; it’s the matte lipstick phenomenon in general that I can’t get on board with. Take, for example, the NYX Liquid Lingerie collection…
The NYX Lingerie collection features 12 seductive nude shades that range from subtle beiges, pretty pinks, muted purples, chocolate browns and warm mahogany reds, all with a weightless matte finish. I picked up Baby Doll, a pink toned taupe shade for £6.50/4ml.
When I opened the package the formula looked like it had separated in the tube but after a few pumps of the wand it came together nicely. On my hand the formula appears to be creamy, thick and highly pigmented. The shade can be described as a your-lips-but-better colour. It dries almost instantly on the lips leaving them feeling rather chalky and dry. Unfortunately, Baby Doll settled into every crack in my lips. Even with a lip scrub prior to application this liquid lipstick, like so many before it, left my lips looking shriveled and old lady like. If this wasn’t bad enough the colour soon became patchy and although it claims to feel ‘weightless’, it made my lips feel uncomfortable and tight.
I was so excited to try this collection as I loved the subtle differences in the variety of shades available, but this lipstick feels chalky and just plain uncomfortable. Matte finish lipsticks just don’t work for me. They never have done. I’ve yet to find a matte formula that doesn’t crack or settle into every crease and I’m afraid to say, despite the hype, Baby Doll was just another disappointment.
