“Give a woman the right makeup and she can conquer the world.”
A year ago I’d never heard of Charlotte Tilbury, now receiving one of her coveted lipsticks was the highlight of my Christmas. Charlotte is a professional award-winning makeup artist that has worked with some of the most notorious photographers, models and celebrities in the fashion and beauty industry, not to mention publications such as GQ, Vanity Fair and Vogue. She also previously worked as a Creative Consultant for MAC, Chanel and Tom Ford. It’s no surprise that Charlotte decided to pour all her secrets, industry know-how and passion into her own range which launched in 2013. Her iconic burgundy packaging with rose gold detailing reminds me of old Hollywood glamour and has become instantly recognisable. It really is incredible that her brand has won over 50 awards and become a leader in luxury cosmetics in such a short period of time.
The Hot Lips collection was created in collaboration with 12 strong, successful and influential women including Kate Moss, Kim K.W., Helena Bonham-Carter and Victoria Beckham. The Hot Lip collection features a beautiful range of shades and formulas that aim to captivate the style and individuality of each leading lady. Secret Salma isn’t a shade I would have chosen for myself, as I tend to gravitate towards dusky pinks such as Kidman’s Kiss but I was excited to try something a little out of my comfort zone and find out, once and for all, if this lipstick is worth the hefty £23 price tag…
Secret Salma is a beautiful deep rose-plum which is said to capture Salma’s ‘enchanting, smouldering and sexy colouring’. The lipstick features CT’s signature Matte Revolution formula enriched with papaya & orchid extract and volumising 3D pigments for “Cashmere-soft lips that look lit from within”. I love how the website actually shows what each lipstick looks like on 10 different skin tones to help you chose a shade, details like this make online shopping so much easier as there’s only one CT counter that I’m aware of in Scotland.
I usually don’t care for matte lip formulas as, with a few exceptions, they have a tendency of settling into every crease and highlighting every possible flaw ageing my lips considerably. Secret Salma, however, has a semi-matte finish that doesn’t completely dry down making it feel comfortable and surprisingly lightweight. This also means that it doesn’t have that unbearable chalky texture or crack and crumble throughout the day.
The formula is richly pigmented and doesn’t bleed so paying more for an additional lip liner really isn’t necessary. The angled tip and creamy texture helps to make application effortless and despite it not drying down, it’s still very long lasting. It didn’t budge all Christmas day despite me devouring everything in sight and treating myself to a few glasses of bubbly. Would I say it ‘lights my lips from within’? No, but I didn’t really expect it too. Although I love the luscious colour of Secret Salma, I think it would flatter someone with a deeper skin tone than mine. I’m in love with the formula of this ‘modern-matte’ lipstick even though I didn’t find it as ‘luminous’ as the box claims it to be. As my birthday is approaching, I have my eye on Nude Kate so I can try CT’s signature K.I.S.S.I.N.G formula next. I’m delighted that the hype surrounding Charlotte Tilbury appears to be justified (this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship), but what about her eye products? Look out for my review of her Colour Chameleon Eyeshadow Pencil coming soon.
