I intended to have this post written and posted before the revival, but clearly, that didn’t happen. I don’t claim to be a die-hard fan, I didn’t watch the series way back in 2000 when the first episode aired, in fact, I watched it for the first time only a couple of months ago on Netflix. I had no idea that Melissa McCarthy or Jared Padalecki even starred in it, I only knew Alexis Bledel as ‘that girl from Sin City’ and, I didn’t have a clue about its cult following. I can’t even remember it ever being aired on TV in the UK.
After having my baby it took me a while to recover, the pain from my episiotomy made it difficult to move from the sofa so the first couple of weeks of my maternity leave revolved around watching boxsets and making my way through my Netflix suggestions. Gilmore Girl’s was recommended to me a while ago by my friend Jenna, however, as I knew so little about it I brushed it off in favour of rewatching OUAT, Buffy and Firefly. I think it was mother-daughter dynamics of Gilmore Girls that resonated so deeply with me. My tiny baby girl was literally lying on my chest while I made my way through each episode. ‘Where You Lead’ by Carol King became our song and I would sing it to her before placing her gently in her Moses basket each and every night. Penny is my Rory and I am her Lorelai.
The writing is flawless and the dialogue is iconic. It allows each character to bounce off one other without overshadowing or drowning out their co-stars. Within just a few episodes you fall in love and identify with these multi-dimensional characters with incredible comedic timing and spirit. Kirk’s schemes make you giggle, you live for Paris’ outbursts, your heart skips a beat when Luke and Lorelai’s eye meet, you can’t wait for Friday night dinner and you live for every second the queen that is Emily Gilmore appears on the screen. There’s just something about Gilmore Girls that feels like home. There’s a familiarity, a warmth and comfort I feel every time I watch it. Here are just a few memorable quotes from my favourite ever TV show containing no spoilers, in no particular order and with completely no context…
“Only prostitutes have two glasses of wine at lunch.”
“Cheeseburger, onion rings, and a list of people who killed their parents and got away with it. I’m looking for heroes.”
“I smell snow.”
“If eating cake is wrong, I don’t want to be right.”
“If you’re gonna throw your life away he better have a motorcycle.”
“I’m just a big, fat Wookie-humping loser with no future!”
“I can be flexible, as long as everything is exactly the way I want it, I’m totally flexible.”
“Everything in my life has something to do with coffee. I believe in a former life, I was coffee.”
“Wow, that was pornographic.”
“She’s got a C average which means she’s either lazy or stupid. I can work with either. Frankly sometimes stupid is easier. I can scare the stupid out of you, but the lazy runs deep.”
“You’ve been Gilmored.”
“This great man was not brought down by my vagina, okay?”
“She filled our house with love and fun and books and music, unflagging in her efforts to give me role models from Jane Austen to Eudora Welty to Patti Smith. As she guided me through these incredible eighteen years, I don’t know if she ever realized that the person I most wanted to be was her…”
“I’m afraid once your heart is involved, it all comes out in moron.”
“By the way, I think you might be the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen, outside of a really filthy magazine.”
“It’s called Vicious Trollop.”
“You can use your mother’s old golf clubs. They’re upstairs, gathering dust, along with the rest of her potential.”
“Coffee, please, and a shot of cynicism.”
“Oy, with the poodles already.”

What’s your favourite episode? Mines has got to be either “They Shoot Gilmores, Don’t They?” or “Raincoats & Recipes”.
