So far, my only experience of Kat Von D beauty has been her London Calling kit which included miniature versions of her three bestselling products: the Waterproof Tattoo Liner, Everlasting Liquid Lipstick and Studded Kiss Lipstick. I can honestly say that the formula of all three products is utter perfection. It was just a matter of time until I got my paws on another product from her cruelty-free visually stunning collection.
Can we just take a second to appreciate the beauty of the packaging? Whilst I understand it might not be to everyone’s taste, I think it’s iconic. The Shade & Light Eye Contour Quad is currently available in four colour combinations: Rust, Sage, Plum & Smoke. Each palette contains four matte shades designed to work harmoniously together to enhance eye shape and colour. The kit also comes with an easy-to-follow ‘How To’ insert and mirror.
The travel-sized palette contains a ‘Base’ shade (2.63g) and three shades in ‘Define’, ‘Contour’ and ‘Highlight’ (1.15g each). The base shade is a greyish taupe that blends effortlessly onto the lid creating an instantaneous smokey effect. ‘Define’ is a simple black that is not quite as pigmented at my MUG Corrupt, but nevertheless has a smooth, buildable formula that isn’t patchy in the slightest. The ‘Contour’ shade is a bluish grey that flawlessly adds depth and drama to the outer crease and the ‘Highlight’ shade is a creamy white, that gives a small amount of fallout, which helps diffuse and blend out your look.
Each shade is highly pigmented so only a little of each is needed to create a dramatic look. I’m really impressed with this mini palette as all four shades feel rich, silky and blend like an absolute dream. They’re also long lasting, I didn’t notice any fading until around the 8-hour mark. The only drawback is that this coffin-shaped quad doesn’t come with an applicator, so it’s not completely travel-friendly but personally, I’d rather have space for more product than a tiny brush I’d never use.
I’m delighted that my first experience with the KVD eyeshadow collection has been so positive. Smoke is a basic but beautiful, easy to use palette with just the right amount of edge. Now, if I could only get my hands on her celestial Alchemist Holographic Palette…
