Everyone looks for something different in a mascara; whether it be volume, definition, length, a long lasting curl or a water-proof formula. As I’m awful at applying false lashes (although I am getting better thanks to my Eylure Lash Applicator) I find myself drawn to mascara that promise to deliver the same glamorous, high-volume look that falsies give.
After returning to work after my maternity leave and surviving my first week back I decided to treat myself. I stumbled across a YSL counter and I was immediately drawn in by the beautiful packaging of the Volume Effet Faux Cils Luxurious Mascara. Yes, £25.50 is an eye-watering amount to pay for mascara but makeup is my one vice and I was feeling a little indulgent, plus my hubby had just paid over £200 for a metal stick (a new golf club) so I thought to hell with it, I deserve a treat too.
Highstreet brands have really upped their game recently and although obviously, you expect to pay more for a designer label, at £25 I expected the wow factor… and I was left disappointed. The Volume Effet Faux Cils Luxurious Mascara is by no means a ‘bad’ mascara, it’s just very average. Why? The wand isn’t exactly innovative, the opening of the tube instantly became clogged, it smudged throughout the day and I really have to work at my lashes to achieve the look I wanted. It’s all just hard work.
Obviously, you need at least a few weeks to judge a product fairly (I purchased this over a month ago), but I also believe that first impressions are important too. I knew from the first application that this just wasn’t anything special, it didn’t give me that ‘wow feeling’ that I felt when I first tried Lash Sensational or They’re Real. My lashes were just ‘nice’, nothing spectacular and nothing to write home about, definitely not worth £25 when compared to others in my collection worth a fifth of the price. I’m kicking myself that I didn’t put my money towards their Touche Eclat Blur Primer instead.
Have you purchased any high-end beauty products recently that didn’t impress you despite the hype?
